AIDS WALK FAQs
Why is Janus supporting AIDS Walk?
It’s local. The money raised at AIDS Walk benefits people in the SF Bay area.
It benefits Janus. The HIV/AIDS service organizations in this area promote safer
sex practices, which makes all of us safer.
It touches all of us, whether we know it or not. Thanks to all the research and
advances in treatment over the past 25 years, there are people in the BDSM
community who are living with AIDS instead of dying with it.
Why is it called the “Cynthia Slater Memorial Team”? Why not call it the Society of Janus team?
Some people would like to be able to walk with us, but may have concerns about
being outed, if friends, family, or coworkers are at the AIDS Walk event. By
calling the team the “Cynthia Slater Memorial Team”, we were building in a means of plausible deniability. “I’m walking with some friends who formed a team in memory of someone they loved.”
So, who is Cynthia Slater?
Cynthia Slater was the driving force behind the founding of Janus. At the time
Janus was formed, everyone was playing together at the same parties. When AIDS initially hit, no one knew what was happening, nor why. They only knew
that people were getting sick and dying.
Cynthia was one of them.
What does participating with the team involve?
* Helping with fundraising as little or as much as you’d like.
* Showing up at Golden Gate Park on July 18th and walking with us.
See? Simple.
Golden Gate Park is pretty big. How far is this walk, anyway?
It’s 10,000 kilometers, which is about 6.2 miles. Easily walked in 2-3 hours.
Is this going to be like a race, or something?
No, more like a walk in the park. Picture thousands of people, strolling around
in Golden Gate Park. There will be special entertainments, both during and
after the walk.
When and where do I have to be on the day of the Walk?
9:00 am Sign-in starts in Mother’s Meadow, near Hippie Hill.
9:30 am Aerobic Warm-Ups.
9:45 am Opening ceremony in Sharon Meadow
10:30 am AIDS Walk begins!
12:30 pm Post-Walk concert and entertainment begins in Sharon Meadow
I’m all about the swag. Are we going to have team t-shirts?
We’d prefer to have all our fundraising dollars go towards the team goal. But, if
you have people donating to you as an individual walker, you could qualify for
an AIDS Walk SF t-shirt and other goodies (depending on the amount raised).
AND, if you register with a goal of raising $1,000 as an individual, you are
designated as a “Star Walker” with a nifty pin and various other VIP benefits the day of the walk.
Wait … does this mean there is a required amount I have to raise?
There are no minimum amounts to participate – and no requirement that you, as an individual, raise money. Helping us with our team fundraising is greatly appreciated, though.
OK, you’ve convinced me. How do I register to walk?
Step 2: Click on the “Join our team” link.
Step 3: Complete your registration, being sure to select
“Cynthia Slater Memorial Team - 1947” from the list of teams.
So, I’m confused. Am I registering as an individual, with individual donations, or am I
registering with the SoJ team?
You’re doing both. When you go to our team page, you register as an individual joining the “Cynthia Slater Memorial Team”. Your name will show up on the list of team members. People can choose to donate online by clicking on the “General Donations” link for the team, or by clicking on the name of any of the team members.
But what if I don’t want my legal name to show up on the list of team members?
No problem. You can register using a scene name. They won’t be checking IDs when you check-in.
How do I make a donation online?
Go to our team page, and either click on “General Donations” to donate to the team as a whole, or click on the name of a walker to credit
your donation to their individual goal.
What if I don’t want my legal name to show up on the team donations?
You can make it anonymously, if you wish. After you process your payment, there are several options for how your donation
appears online.
How else can I donate?
You can attend one of our fundraisers, or you can put your donations in one of
our “Spare change?” donation cans at Janus events between now and July 18th.
What kind of fundraising events are you doing?
The first is the “People’s Choice Tie-Up/Tie-Down Tie-Off” on May 29th. Click here for info.
What if I don’t want to walk, but I do want to help?
Our team will need people to help with our fundraisers. Use the Contact Us page on the SOJ website to let any of the officers know you want to help, and we’ll find a way to put you to work.
And remember – one of the best ways you can help is to donate. Every little bit helps.
Also, the AIDS Walk organization has opportunities for people to help out before
and during the event.
